van Gogh’s letters

I’ve been listening to this series on BBC– it’s an audiobook of letters between Vincent van Gogh and his family and friends. I don’t know much about art, except for what my mother-in-law (artist Diane Scott) shares with me when we visit museums together– but like many people, I do know many of van Gogh’s paintings. Listening to him talk about his art and colours, and his passion to capture it in his canvases is inspiring.

Book of the Week- Vincent van Gogh: The Letters- Episode 1

Mark Rylance and Julius D’Silva read from a new edition of Van Gogh’s prodigious correspondence.

This selection illustrates the artist’s contradictions and complexities: his self-doubt and his passionate ambition; his close bond with his brother Theo; and his sometimes troubled relationships with other family members and fellow artists. What emerges above all is his overriding passion for his art.

Abridged by Doreen Estall.
