Seizing on students’ desire for a year off before college, Princeton University is working to create a program to send a tenth or more of its newly admitted students to a year of social service work in a foreign country before they set foot on campus as freshmen. Full story.
I think this is a fantastic idea.
I would take it further and recommend that all college students should spend a year outside their home country– make it a five year course instead of four. Ideally, have students do an internship as well. For those in the UK, make it a four year course instead of three. This need not be an expensive program to set up, provided you don’t opt for Sweden or Ireland or Japan.
